Lutro Gard Lofthus

Lutro Gard

Lutro Farm is located in Hardanger in Ullensvang municipality by the Sørfjorden, approximately 2.

3 kilometers from Lofthus and 7. 8 kilometers from Kinsarvik. The farm is today run by the couple Helga Opedal and Olav Strand, who maintain it as a fruit farm with long traditions dating back to 1706. Lutro has been in Helga’s family since that time, and the traditions of fruit growing are deeply rooted in the landscape and culture of Hardanger. Today the farm produces and refines fruit into both fresh produce, canned varieties and juices. The main focus is on cherries and plums, but apples are also used in certain products. Among the products are cherry juice, canned plums and cherries, as well as juices and preserves that allow people to enjoy the fruit both as fresh seasonal products and as processed goods throughout the year. The farm has about 2300 trees, and the production includes dessert cherries, yellow plums, the Opal variety and other traditional fruits. In addition, the farm makes plum jam, chili marmalade, apple jelly and apple purée with vanilla and cinnamon, making the range varied and attractive to both locals and visitors. Lutro Farm also has a farm shop where visitors can buy the products directly. The shop is placed in a historic environment and includes the old barn from the 1870s, which has been rebuilt as a sales space and gallery. This unique combination of history and commerce makes a visit more than just shopping, it is also a cultural experience. In addition to sales, the farm offers a photo gallery and guided tours of the production facilities. Visitors can see how the fruit is grown, harvested and processed, and at the same time enjoy the atmosphere of the old buildings. The farm places great emphasis on combining tradition and modernization. Old structures are still visible, but they are used together with modern equipment that makes the production efficient and safe. Lutro Farm also offers overnight stays. There are several options, such as Gamlastovo, a timber house with a large living room, kitchen and space for six people, Solhaug, a charming cottage with views of the fjord and its own garden and terrace, and Kårhuset, a larger house with several bedrooms and full facilities including kitchen, living room, bathroom, TV and laundry. These accommodations allow guests to deepen their experience of Hardanger and stay right in the orchard. For groups and tourists who want more than just shopping, Lutro Farm offers farm visits with walks in the orchard and guided tours in the production facilities. This is ideal for bus groups, school classes or tourists who want to learn more about Norwegian fruit production and local food traditions. The location by the Sørfjorden gives spectacular views of fjord and mountains, and the orchard lies in a landscape that has made Hardanger world famous. Lutro Farm is part of Hardanger’s strong identity as a fruit region, and their products are marketed through local food networks and in stores such as Meny. Some of the products have been highlighted in the media as examples of high-quality local food, and the farm places great emphasis on making sure tradition and history are present in the taste. With roots back to 1706, visitors do not only get food, but also a piece of cultural history. The long heritage is visible in the buildings, in the product names and in the way the farm arranges experiences. Lutro Farm therefore combines the role of food producer, cultural communicator and tourist destination. Here visitors can shop fruit and processed goods, enjoy art and photography, walk through the orchard, learn about the production process and at the same time stay on the farm. This combination makes Lutro Farm more than a traditional fruit farm, it is a holistic destination where nature, history, food culture and hospitality meet.

The farm emphasizes that consumers should get an authentic experience of quality and local identity from tree to jar, and that the products should not only taste good but also tell the story of Hardanger, the farm and an enduring commitment to fruit cultivation that has lasted for centuries.
